Perry is she is Chicago native born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. However, her parents didn't want her to pursue acting until she became an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry confessed that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school. She began acting to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University moved to New York in search of television roles. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California to find theater work. She appeared on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. In the year 2015, she was together with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning Drama Anna Christie. It is part of the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her dad. She was also cast in her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close family connection to the character.
